The language and the food are not strictly Italian. They have been heavily influenced by the French, the Portuguese, the Spanish, the Germans and the Austrians (not to mention those Vikings!). While you're eating a Cicchetti standing up and enjoying the view from the top of the Clock Tower, the crowds of tourists will be simply standing around gazing and not knowing what to do next. But you will!
GET LOST AND LOVE EVERY MINUTE OF IT!
The streets & alleyways were created over 1,500 years ago. Locals have added them, and connected them in the darndest ways over those centuries. They are rife with secret passageways and bridges that lead nowhere, many put there to escape and fool Vandals. Today, you can count on the fact that you WILL get lost in Venice. But while you're enjoying the secret clues all around you while you find your way out, you'll notice other visitors getting confused and angry and hating every minute of it. But not you!
WHAT ABOUT THE CRAZY STREET NAMES & FLAKEY ADDRESS NUMBERS?
[Please know that I'm laughing as I write this!] No worries here! The streets actually make sense when they are decoded. And those address numbers that mean absolutely nothing? (Example: 29 main street could be right between 314 Main street and 1027 Main Street.) The numbers were added. Then homes were build in between. Then shops were built between those. The street names change seemingly randomly. So yes, those address numbers are meaningless. And if you are trying to explain to someone where to meet you, do not use the address numbers (LOL!) unless you want to anger them - use landmarks. Better yet, leave breadcrumbs! This is part of the charm of Venice, a truly ancient city that has not been changed by streetlights and malls.
